Female pedestrian struck, killed in Menifee accident

A Menifee woman died after being struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Menifee Road and Highway 74 Thursday night, authorities said.

Sheriff's deputies responded at 6:24 p.m. to the scene of the accident on Menifee Road north of Highway 74, according to a news release. A preliminary investigation determined that a motorist was heading northbound on Menifee Road and struck the woman, who stepped into the roadway in front of the vehicle.

The victim, identified as Briana Upton-Owens, 19, of the Romoland community in Menifee, died from her injuries at the Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley.

The driver of the vehicle and passengers were uninjured and remained on scene during the investigation. Menifee Road was closed between Verela Lane and Watson Road during the investigation.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the accident.
