Each week, Menifee 24/7 honors top student-athletes at Paloma Valley High School. The coach of each varsity sport is allowed to select athletes based on the previous week's performances or on potential shown by the athlete. Here are this week's Paloma Valley High School Athletes of the Week:
Wide receiver Blake Moore and linebacker Damien Torres share this week's honor of representing the football team, which is 4-0. Moore caught 3 passes for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Torres anchored the defense in the Wildcats' 42-18 win over Corona.
Senior Tristan Sylva opened the boys cross country season with three outstanding performances. He ran 9:52 over a 2-mile course at the Bronco Round-up in Escondido, placing second and breaking the school record by more than 12 seconds. He led his team to victory in the first league meet, covering the 3-mile Perris course in 15:22. He also placed third out of 160 runners in the Woodbridge Invitational with a time of 14:50.
Mai Franks led the girls cross country team with a time of 19:42 last weekend in the Woodbridge Invitational. She has already surpassed her early-season goal of breaking 20 minutes. "Mai is an excellent student, setting an example for the younger students by pursuing excellence in both the classroom and on the athletic fields," said assistant coach Joe Ellett. "We are proud to have Mai represent our team as the Athlete of the Week."
Brenna Mayo of the girls tennis team "has improved a lot in the last year," said her coach, David McCoy. "She has worked very hard to earn her status this year. She is going to have a great league season and I'm looking forward to watching her."
Aeris Woods is senior captain of the girls volleyball team. Woods, who was first-team all-league last year, is leading the team in kills and passing efficiency.
