The application period for seats on the Menifee City Council closed with no additional candidates qualified on Friday, meaning only four residents will be on the November ballot, and two will be running unopposed.
Only the mayor's race has two candidates -- incumbent Scott Mann and Neil Winter, who ran unsuccessfully for a District 3 council seat last fall. Mann, who became Menifee's first elected mayor in 2012, is seeking his third two-year term. Other council member terms are for four years and represent one of four districts in the city.
Mann served on the inaugural City Council in 2008, before the mayor's position became a separately elected council position. He lost a bid for re-election to Tom Fuhrman, then served on the Menifee Union School District Board before being elected as mayor two years later. Mann is director of risk management for the Moreno Valley Unified School District and serves as chairman of the Riverside County Republican Party.
Winter is a retired businessman who most recently worked part-time for the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce. He lost to Lesa Sobek last fall to fill the remaining year of the District 3 term of Wallace Edgerton, who died while in office. Winter is promoting himself as a strong candidate because he would serve as a "full-time mayor."
The other two City Council seats up for election Nov. 8 are in District 3 and District 1. No one applied to challenge the incumbents in those districts, so Sobek in District 3 and Greg August in District 1 will run unopposed.
District 2 council member Matt Liesemeyer and District 4 council member John Denver each have two years remaining in their terms.

Neil Winter for Mayor!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest Menifee doesn't need a full time Mayor that has no understanding of the city structure and the tasks at hand to manage the structure and the diverse demographics of our city. That just means a full timer (so he claims) that doesn't have a clue. What we continue to need is a part timer that knows what they are doing. Winter mentions that business owners complain and might not come to Menifee because of permitting costs, this during a time where more business's have opened in the past 12 months than any other time in Menifees' history. If he researched he would discover that Menifee is equal to or less than our surrounding cities. Winter also states that he "has empathy for business owners and residents of Menifee. We don't need him to feel sorry for us nor is there a reason too. We need someone that experience, understands demographics, balance of residential and commercial, ,and has actually walked in business owners shoes. Working a few months selling chamber memberships only to get his name out in the community is not considered experience. Not long ago Winter addressed city council, the mayor and residents at a council meeting that HOA's should not allow properties to be rentals in the community. Was not aware we were a communist country. A perfect example of "not knowing what your talking about." Please, everyone vote for the right reason. If your going to vote for the guy that stands on a street corner and waves to cars you might as well vote for the guy that waves to cars for the Vape Shop on Antelope.
ReplyDeleteYes, Menifee has had it's growing pains but that's normal for all young cities. Menifee "The City Of A Lifetime" has handled it much better than most.
A vote for inexperience, Winter someone who's running because he has nothing better to do, will leave Menifee in the cold.
