Riverside County Animal Services has identified two people believed to be the owners of dozens of dogs that were discovered in emaciated condition or dead at a property near Lake Mathews last week.
Animal Services is pursuing arrest warrants against both individuals, according to a news release, although one is already in custody. Carl Dixon, 48, of Los Angeles is being held at the Men's Central Jail in L.A. facing drug charges, according to jail records. He is believed to the owner of the dogs found unattended at a rental property on Avocado Lane on July 20.
Operating on an anonymous tip, animal control officers seized 27 pit bulls suffering from emaciated conditions and severe dehydration. Another 11 dogs were found dead at the property and removed as well.
In addition to Dixon, Animal Services is pursuing an arrest warrant for Dixon's wife, Kim Delagos, whose location is unknown.
According to the news release, Dixon was an active supporter of pit bulls and pit bull breeding. He spoke at a Riverside County Board of Supervisors meeting in opposition to a proposed ordinance to regulate the reproduction of pit bulls.
One of the 27 pit bulls seized at the property has since died. The other dogs appears to be responding well to treatment. They range in age from 8 months to 10 years. Some were placed on fluids to treat severe hydration.
