Baseball standout Kevin Moscoso and track and field star Winter Carreno have been named the Menifee 24/7 March Athletes of the Month from Paloma Valley High School, sponsored by Photos DLite photography studio.
Moscoso, a junior third baseman, has been one of the hottest hitters on the Wildcats baseball team all season. Earlier this season, he hit three consecutive doubles to help the team win the Norco Tournament.
"The highlight of my season would have to be seeing my team coming together and playing as a unit," Moscoso said. "We had a game a while back against Etiwanda and that really showed Wildcat baseball. It showed the level our team can play at, and we've been trying to match that ever since.
"I would say my batting is my strength," said Moscoso, who is batting .414 this season with one home run, 21 RBIs and 9 doubles for the Wildcats, who are 14-7 overall.
Carreno is the returning league champion in the high jump and 100-meter hurdles and also competes in the long jump and triple jump this season. She says her favorite event is the high jump, in which she recently broke the school record at 5-2 1/2.
"The way I approach four events is by knowing that the order of events is generally the same at most meets," Carreno said. "Therefore, I know I will compete in hurdles first before competing in jumps. Sometimes I will have to run between jumps, so when that occurs I will compete in the jumps I'm better at first.
"I would consider my most challenging event to be the triple jump because trying to learn to jump from the 32-foot board and increase my jump distances can be both physically and mentally hard to overcome."
Carreno's coach, Juan Merida, has high praise for his star athlete.
"Winter is a relentless competitor and an outstanding student," Merida said. "She is always willing to try new events to help out the team and has excelled in those events. Winter is also ranked in the Top 25 academically of the junior class."
