Each week, Menifee 24/7 honors top student-athletes at Paloma Valley High School. The coach of each varsity sport is allowed to select athletes based on the previous week's performances or on potential shown by the athlete. Here are this week's Paloma Valley High School Athletes of the Week:
Tristan Sylva of the boys track team runs the anchor leg on three relay teams, all of which won gold medals at the Sparta Relays last week. He made up 7 meters and finished first by 20 meters as the anchor of the 4 x 1600 relay. Two races later, he anchored the 4 x 400 relay team that won with a breakaway in the last 100 meters. Paloma Valley won the Division 2 team championship.
The boys tennis doubles team of River Recatto and Rylie Ibison went undefeated against Temescal Canyon and won five out of six in two matches against Lakeside. Recatto will attend UC San Diego next year.
Freshman Alyssa Moore of the girls track team has consistently improved her times in the 400 meters. Against Perris she ran a 58.86, which is a freshman school record and is .3 off the overall school record. Her 58.86 is also the No. 1 time in the Sunbelt league.
Another member of the girls track team honored is freshman Miale Jones. In her first time ever running the 800 meters, she ran a 2:31, which broke the freshman school record. Not only was that her first time ever running the 800, but she did it on one day's notice.
Baseball player Angelo Capolupo hit over .500 and was named tournament MVP of the Norco Tournament. He is hitting .471 overall.
The boys volleyball team's honoree is Gerrit Vander Feer, who excelled in matches against Murrieta Valley and Vista Murrieta.
"He stayed focused on the defense at the net and was able to come up with a good amount of blocks for our team," said his coach, Katie Bradley. "Gerrit is a hard worker and a great teammate."
First baseman Abigail Callais is hitting .346 for the softball team, which is 10-7 overall.
These athletes will be eligible for the April Athlete of the Month award. Anyone wishing to order a glossy print of this article with photo may do so by emailing menifee247info@gmail.com.
