Dr. Jonathan Greenberg announced today he is retiring from his position as superintendent of the Perris Union High School District, effective Aug 31.
Greenberg, who has worked in public education for 39 years, has held the superintendent's position in PUHSD for 9 1/2 years. In that position, he oversees the operation of the two public high schools in Menifee -- Paloma Valley and Heritage.
Now 61, Greenberg said it was strictly his decision to leave the position and that he looks forward to a life of retirement with his wife Nicole at their home in Temecula. The couple has a son and daughter-in-law living in Menifee and a granddaughter who attends Paloma Valley.
"It was time," Greenberg told Menifee 24/7 today. "I'm leaving of my own volition and I'm looking forward to the opportunities I will have in retirement, including spending time with my family."
Greenberg said he will recommend at the March 16 PUHSD Board meeting that Grant Bennett, the district assistant superintendent of educational services, be named to replace him.
"This is a great community and I've been very fortunate to be a part of it," he said. "I'm going out very happy and content. Most of what was accomplished in this district was accomplished by others who worked with me, not myself. At the end of the day, you just do your best work and take pride in what you do."
Greenberg's first position as a principal was in San Gabriel with Jefferson Middle School, which is now Gabrielino High School. Prior to his position with PUHSD, he was deputy superintendent of the Hemet Unified School District.
During his tenure at PUHSD, Greenberg oversaw the opening of Heritage High School and was instrumental in the passing of Measure T, a bond measure to raise funds for a new high school in Menifee. He is hoping for the passing of a ballot measure in November to provide the rest of the funding for that school.
"I'm proud that we opened up Heritage High School on my watch and I'm proud of the passage of Measure T," Greenberg said. "Everyone said we would never pass a bond measure for that school."
Greenberg said he also is proud of the technological advances in the district that have made PUHSD one of the state's leading districts in student learning.
"We have great parents and great kids in this district," he said. "We have done some great things here."
