A Menifee minister known for his stance on social issues announced this week that his congregation will host a Muslim leader during its worship service on Jan. 24.
In a news release, Senior Minister Bill Freeman said he will have a conversation with Abdallah Jadallah, director of the Perris Islamic Center, during the service, to be held at 10 a.m. at the Menifee United Church of Christ, 26701 McCall Blvd.
"We need to stop fearing Muslims and start talking with Muslims," Freeman said. "I look forward to talking with our guest about Islam, the Quran, and other topics."
People in the congregation will be able to ask questions of the Muslim leader.
According to the news release, the church will host several interfaith leaders at its worship services in January. Rabbi David Lazar of Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs will talk about Judaism on Jan. 10. And Ros Dong of Vista Buddhist Temple in Vista will discuss Buddhism on Jan. 31.
Freeman was at the center of attention before a packed house in a Menifee City Council meeting in May after announcing that his church would shelter homeless people. Freeman said recently that a small number of homeless do use the church facilities for shelter.
In November, Freeman reported to police that he received threats after announcing that his church would welcome Syrian refugees. Freeman said someone posted on the church's front lawn a sign saying "This church is a blasphemous cult" and that Freeman "preaches a gospel different than Jesus."
