A Menifee woman died Friday after driving off a freeway transition road, then walking or running back into traffic and being struck on another vehicle, authorities said today.
The Coroner's Office identified the victim as Debra Belton, 27, of the Romoland community of Menifee. According to a CHP report, she was driving westbound on the 60 Freeway and heading onto the transition road to southbound Interstate 15 in Jurupa Valley about 11 p.m. when, for unknown reasons, her vehicle veered off the road and traveled down an embankment north of the roadway.
The driver then exited her vehicle, climbed up the enbankment and, again for an unknown reason, crossed the transition road directly into the path of a Chevy Equinox and was struck. She sustained fatal injuries.
Both collisions are under investigation by the CHP. Witnesses or anyone with information regarding either collision are encouraged to contact the Riverside CHP Area at 951-637-8000.
