Two female pedestrians died early this morning when they were struck by a car on Scott Road in an unincorporated area of Winchester just east of Menifee, authorities said.
Jamie Erwin, 34, of Menifee and Mary Pillow, 25, of Winchester died at the scene, according to a County Coroner's report. According to Officer Mike Lassig of the California Highway Patrol, a third person who was injured has not been identified.
The accident occurred about 1:15 a.m., when the women were in the roadway following some sort of domestic disturbance or physical altercation at a residence on Scott Road east of Leon Road, Lassig said.
"It is still unknown what happened to make the people go outside and into the road," Lassig said.
According to a report from Riverside County Fire, the accident occurred in the 31700 block of Scott Road. The third person suffered critical injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
According to Lassig, a 2006 Toyota Tundra driven by Jesus Gonzalez, 34, of Lake Elsinore was traveling westbound on Scott Road at approximately 55 mph when the vehicle struck the pedestrians in the roadway. Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation determined the driver was not under the influence and he was not arrested, Lassig said.
