Paloma Valley High School football fans witnessed an emotional event Friday night, Sept. 11, at the school's Military Appreciation Night. The Wildcats defeated King High of Riverside, 35-21, but the biggest moment came before opening kickoff.
The "Big Flag" -- a 45,000-square-foot flag that covers the entire field -- was displayed to the crowd during pregame ceremonies as loudspeakers blared Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA". Following a moment of silence to remember victims of the 9/11 tragedy and military personnel who gave their lives in defending our country, the national anthem was played.
More than 250 young people -- members of the school's NJROTC Battalion and the freshman football team -- held up the flag, which has been displayed at Super Bowls and the World Series. Paloma Valley became only the second high school ever to display the flag, which is most often displayed at San Diego Chargers games and San Diego bowl games. Master Sgt. Frank Puebla, who is in charge of Paloma Valley's NJROTC Battalion, made the connections with Big Flag officials to make it happen.
Veterans and active military personnel were admitted to the game for free.
