To enjoy a taste of Mexico with a creative flair you won't find elsewhere, Provecho Grill is the place to be.

Chef and owner Rosie O'Connor offers both authentic Mexican fare and dishes heavily influenced by her knowledge of local Mexican culture and creativity in bringing that flavor to her guests. This results in a varied menu built on Mexican tradition and spiced with her delicious creations using fresh and sustainable ingredients.

"We do have authentic dishes, but others are not authentic -- they are our creation, but heavily influenced by the Mexican culture," Rosie said. "We have sustainable seafood, our carne asada is certified Angus beef, and we stay with the seasons. That's why our menu changes so much.

"If we have sea bass, we put that out there. If you go to Mexico, the food is going to be fresh and sustainable. They eat off the land; that's what we want to do here. We're not 100 percent authentic. I try to stay true to everything I learned in all my visits to Mexico and all my father has taught me, but I will create dishes I feel are comfort foods with that Mexican influence. A lot of them have been very successful."

That is evident in the crowds that come to Provecho's lively location in the Sun City community of Menifee to enjoy the popular menu, great specials, musical entertainment and family atmosphere.

Provecho offers live music on Thursdays from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Upcoming musical entertainers include Jimmy Patton on Aug. 13 and Tim Walsh on Aug. 20. There's the popular Taco Tuesday promotion, and kids eat free on Mondays. And of course every day of the week, guests enjoy a full bar featuring specialty drinks prepared by a mixologist who caters to each guest's preference in beverages.


Many of the drinks served at Provecho are creations you won't taste anywhere else. Some are featured during special events, such as tequila tastings and pairings, where guests learn about how to prepare four different tequila drinks as well as how to pair them with food. These events are limited to about 75 people and sell out quickly.

"Those are very popular," Rosie said. "The guests get four different signature drinks. We talk about processing, how the drinks are made. Then each drink is paired with our food. We also make our own ice cream and sorbet. It's community seating. Everyone has a great time."

All the while, guests enjoy the varied choices from a menu that keeps them coming back. Dishes such as pork chops with Ancho barbeque sauce, muscle clams and chorizo, and shrimp veracruz are among the popular items.

"The shrimp veracruz, you'll actually find that in Veracruz," Rosie said. "That's authentic to that area. If you're not familiar with all of Mexico, you're going to come in and say 'It's not Mexican.' But it is authentic. I try to stay true to what I think should go out there to the guests."
