Menifee 24/7 Editor Doug Spoon reviews the StreamSmart smart TV system:
One would think that, as a journalist for nearly four decades, I had seen the classic film "Citizen Kane" long before this.
Sure, I knew it was considered by many the No. 1 movie of all time. Yes, I knew it was a cinematic masterpiece and character study of the life of a journalist -- even though producer and star Orson Welles claimed it was not the film version of newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst's life.
Yet somehow, I had never taken the time to track down a copy of "Citizen Kane" for viewing at home. Never signed up for nor searched Netflix, Red Box or any other such resources for what I figured was a film just gathering dust on a shelf somewhere.
Then I got a StreamSmart box.
StreamSmart is a smart TV box that hooks into your television set. It's about the size of a paperback book, but with the energy to harness the vast power of the Internet. You can find old movies and TV shows on there that you'd long forgotten about or always wanted to see -- without spending cash on Amazon or other sites to purchase a copy. You can also view the latest movie releases from the comfort of your living room.
If you have a cable or satellite service, turn it off and turn StreamSmart on. By scanning the Internet, this receiver can find broadcasts of your favorite show anywhere around the world. You can't download the program, but you can stream it for viewing in the comfort of your home. As long as you have a TV and an Internet connection, you're good to go.
That's how I spent a recent Saturday afternoon watching an Orson Welles film from some 75 years ago. It's also how I manage to watch Dodgers baseball broadcasts, even though my DirecTV service doesn't carry it. If it's streaming on the Internet somewhere -- and it almost always is -- StreamSmart will find it.
A word of caution -- you'll have to be patient. It may take five minutes or so to find a channel with the show you want, and the first stream might not connect. But if you're willing to give the machine time to search its vast resources, you can almost always find what you want. It might be from an overseas provider, but the picture is clear and the sound excellent.
I know what you're thinking: Is this legal? I had the same concerns. The research I did supports the claims on the StreamSmart website that it is a legal service because it is only streaming content, not downloading it. StreamSmart does not host, archive, store, or distribute media of any kind and acts only as an index of media which is hosted by third parties on the Internet.
