Deadline for Registration of Metal Containers is Aug. 20

Residents who placed metal shipping containers on their property in Menifee prior to July 21, 2014 have until Aug. 20 of this year to provide written notice to the city in order to be in compliance with an ordinance regulating such containers.

The ordinance pertains to the large shipping containers that often are loaded onto ships to transport items. They often are eight feet high, eight feet wide, and may be as long as 40 feet. There are an estimated 15,000 such shipping containers being used by residents in Menifee for storage, mostly on larger lots.

In an ordinance adopted by the Menifee City Council, residents who had such shipping containers on their property at least 30 days prior to the Aug. 20, 2014 ordinance adoption date had one year from that date to register their containers with the city. There is no registration fee. If such notification is not given, the city may order the resident to remove the containers from the property.

According to the ordinance, no additional shipping containers will be allowed in the city. In addition:

-- Shipping containers may be used for personal storage or for keeping materials used in a particular trade.

-- Containers located within 300 feet of a public right-of-way must be screened from view.

-- Containers must be kept in good condition and may not be connected to utilities.

-- Size of the container may not exceed 8x8x40 feet.
