Auditions will be open to students and the general public for the play "The Diviners," which will be presented Oct. 22-25 by the Mt. San Jacinto College Theater Arts Department.
The off-Broadway plan contains themes of friendship, hope, fear, faith, comedy and tragedy. The large cast of colorful country folk portrays a story in the 1930s depression in a small fictitious southern Indiana town named Zion. The central character, Buddy Layman, is a mentally challenged boy who develops a friendship with a traveling disenchanted preacher.
In addition to the role of Buddy, strong roles are needed for an ensemble of six males and five females of varying ages.
Anyone college age and above are eligible to audition. High school juniors and seniors who qualify for concurrent enrollment also are invited to audition. Auditions will take place Aug. 12 and 17, with call-backs on Aug. 19. Auditions will take place from 6-8 p.m. in the MSJC lab theater on the Menifee Valley Campus, room 207.
Those who plan to audition should prepare a monologue (two minutes maximum) from a play of the actor's choosing. Interested actors also are encouraged to read the script prior to the audition.
The director of the play is MSJC Theater Arts Department Chair and Broadway actress Shezwae Powell. For more information, contact her at spowell@msjc.edu. People are also needed to work behind the scenes.
