Update: The Riverside County Sheriff's Department confirmed Wednesday that the woman who was standing on the edge of the Ramona Expressway bridge over Interstate 215 Tuesday night was brought to safety shortly before midnight. She was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for mental illness treatment.
Interstate 215 was shut down in both directions at Ramona Expressway in Perris for several hours Tuesday night when a woman climbed over the freeway bridge fence and onto the catwalk of a freeway sign, appearing ready to jump.
The incident began at about 6:30 p.m. and continued until after 11 p.m. Tuesday night. According to the Riverside Press-Enterprise, the woman was detained at that point and the freeway was soon opened.
Despite the earlier efforts of deputies to talk her down and an effort to assist her with help from a ladder, she continued to pace back and forth on the base of the sign and gesture wildly at times.
Crowds of onlookers gathered in a field on the east side of the freeway and traffic was rerouted off the freeway at Ramona Expressway and back right back on at the other side of the bridge. Even so, northbound traffic was backed up all the way to Nuevo Road late into the evening.
