The suspect in a hit-and-run collision in Homeland that killed a Hemet woman April 29 was arrested on Friday at the U.S./Mexico border station in San Ysidro, according to published reports.
Jail records identify the suspect as Felipe Avalos Gonzalez, 43. He was arrested by the California Highway Patrol at the border station and was booked at Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside shortly before midnight on Friday.
KCBS-2 reported that Gonzalez had escaped to Mexico but returned to the U.S. and turned himself in at the urging of his family and attorney. Gonzalez faces charges of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and hit-and-run death. Bail is set at $75,000, according to jail records.
Gonzalez is suspected of running over 36-year-old Jennifer Campbell, a mother of two, as she walked with a companion along Sultanas Road north of Highway 74 in Homeland the night of April 29. Campbell died from her injuries.
