Each week, Menifee 24/7 honors top student-athletes at Paloma Valley High School. The coach of each varsity sport is allowed to select one athlete based on the previous week's performances or on potential shown by the athlete. Here are this week's Paloma Valley High School Athletes of the Week:
Thomas Stancyk is the team leader in blocks for the Wildcats boys volleyball team, which went undefeated in Sunbelt League play for the second straight season. He helped Paloma Valley defeat Bell Gardens Tuesday in the first round of the CIF Division 3 playoffs. Paloma plays at Righetti on Thursday in the second round.
Senior outfielder Dominic Monachino played a key role in the Wildcats baseball team's sweep of two games against Heritage last week. Coach Chuck Kemp praised him for his hitting, defense and play on the basepaths. Monachino is hitting .427 with 12 RBIs for Paloma Valley, which is 17-8 overall and 12-2 in league play heading into today's game against Temescal Canyon.
Christina Rodriguez was the league champion in the 400 meters and qualified for Saturday's CIF track prelims in three events: the 400, 400 relay and the 1600 relay.
Senior golfer Joseph Garino helped lead his team to the Sunbelt league team championship, the school's first since 2010. He will participate in the team individual tournament on May 18.
The doubles team of Nathan Seeley and Levi Woodward were honored from the boys tennis team. They were a big part of the team's 13-5 victory over Temescal Canyon last week as the team finished second in league play with an 8-2 record.
"Levi is a tall left-handed junior who changed over from baseball to tennis this year," said his coach, Reagan Williams. "He has excellent hand-to-eye coordination that helps him win tennis matches. Nathan is also a tall junior who not only enjoys smashing the ball on his opponents at the net in tennis, but also enjoys playing 'Smash' video games online with his friends."
These athletes will be eligible for selection as Paloma Valley High School's Athletes of the Month, which will be announced the first week of June. Anyone wishing to order a glossy print of this article with photo may do so by emailing menifee247info@gmail.com.
