Two people were hospitalized with serious injuries Sunday night after a shooting in the Sun City community of Menifee, authorities said today.
Sheriff's deputies responded to the 25000 block of Leah Lane, a cul-de-sac off Connie Way and just south of Chambers Avenue about 10:20 p.m. Officers discovered two victims seriously injured, laying in the street. One victim had been shot in the face and the other had sustained a major injury to his lower leg.
Investigators reported that the suspect, Quentin Murphy, 47, of Menifee, had kidnapped his ex-girlfriend from her place of employment nearby. At gunpoint, Murphy forced the female to drive them in her vehicle to his residence on Leah Lane, where he threatened murder suicide, police said. The female victim was able to covertly send a text message to family members for help during the hour-long ordeal inside Murphy’s residence.
At approximately 10:20 p.m., three family friends located the woman's car parked in Murphy’s driveway and knocked on the front door to the residence. As the door opened, the victim fled out the door screaming and gunshots rang out. Murphy, armed with a .38 caliber revolver, chased the three family friends down the street, randomly shooting at them. Murphy shot one victim point-blank in the face and it was discovered that two residences had been hit with stray bullets; however, no neighbors were injured during the shooting.
Blood was still visible on the pavement across the street from the crime scene this morning (above photo).
The shooting ended when one of the three family friends, who had arrived to find the victim, was able to run into Murphy with his pick-up truck, knocking him down and seriously injuring his leg. After knocking Murphy to the ground with the truck, he was able to wrestle the gun from Murphy and hold him on the ground until police arrived.
Matthew Lujan, who lives around the corner on Connie Way, told Menifee 24/7 he heard several shots and looked out his front window to see a woman running down the street, shouting for help.
"We heard seven or eight shots," Lujan said. "It sounded like a ricochet hit our back fence, so we knew the shots were fairly close. We got the kids and threw them on the bathroom floor. I looked out the window and saw the lady right here in front.
"They were yelling for someone to let her in the house. I didn't know if she was going to try to run in my house or what, so I locked all my doors. When I looked back out the window, she was gone."
Lujan said he saw a white truck driving erratically down the street and heard two more gunshots. That's when his wife called 911.
"We gave the description of the vehicle to the police," Lujan said. "I never saw anyone actually shooting at her. Later on, an officer told us someone was shot in the face and we saw two ambulances take people out of here."
Murphy is in the hospital receiving medical treatment for his injured leg and will be booked into jail upon his medical release. Murphy will be charged with kidnapping and attempt murder.
Several adults were gathered this morning outside a residence on Leah Lane where the shooting is believed to have occurred. A woman approached by Menifee 24/7 refused to comment and asked the reporter to leave. Residents at the house next door said they heard the shots but weren't sure what had happened.
Another neighbor on Connie Way said she walked down to the corner after hearing a helicopter and sirens and saw caution tape blocking off Leah Lane.
"People we talked to down there said they heard at least four gunshots and a woman screaming for help," said the neighbor, who asked not to be named. "An officer said there were multiple victims. They told everybody the street would be closed off until at least 5 o'clock this morning."
The neighbor's husband said he talked to a man who lives across the street from the shooting scene who told him a bullet went through the wall of his house near his bedroom window.
"He said they heard arguing outside and saw someone get shot in the face," the neighbor said the man told him.
