The City of Menifee and developer KB Home will honor the memory of a City Council member who died in 2011 by naming a street after Fred Twyman on May 2.
The 10 a.m. ceremony in the Silvercreek community of Audie Murphy ranch will dedicate Twyman Way, reached by Derby Hill Drive off Newport Road. Twyman Way is the longest street in the development and is near Salt Creek, a favorite spot of the late councilman.
Twyman was serving as vice mayor of Menifee at the time of his sudden death at age 46 in June 2011. He was a popular math teacher at Paloma Valley High School and had a long career in education in Perris and Menifee in addition to serving on the Menifee School Board.
"Fred was a wonderful colleague and very dear friend," said council member Wallace Edgerton, who was mayor when Twyman served on the first city council. "He was a champion for those who wished to protect the rural areas and some of the original landscape of Menifee. He shall forever be missed."
Twyman's wife Carolyn, his father Fred, brother Jim and daughters Alyssa, Natalie and Jennifer are expected to attend the special ceremony along with local educators and civic leaders. Another daughter, Fallon Twyman, lives in North Dakota and will participate via an electronic video feed.
This will be the second street in that new development to be named after a prominent Menifee resident who died in recent years. Sergeant Kelly Way was dedicated April 18 in honor of the late Nigel Kelly, a member of the U.S. Army who was killed in Afghanistan the same month Twyman died.
