A Riverside man is in police custody and faces charges of reckless driving, driving under the influence and driving with a suspended driver's license after a police chase through downtown Lake Elsinore early today, March 1.
Jonathan Iniguez, 23, was booked at Southwest Detention Center after a car chase and foot pursuit that ended in Wildomar.
Deputies patrolling the area of Collier Avenue and Hunco Way at 4:20 a.m. observed a 2005 Toyota Corolla swerving from lane to lane. They attempted to stop the vehicle for a vehicle code violation, but the driver refused to yield to the officers.
According to police, deputies observed the driving actions of the driver, who at times was driving in the opposite direction. The driver failed to stop at several stop signs, leading deputies through downtown Lake Elsinore.
The driver continued south on Mission Trail. As the vehicle approached Palomar Street, the driver lost control, striking a fire hydrant in front of The Round Up market. He fled on foot while a passenger remained in the vehicle.
Deputies pursued the suspect on foot, eventually apprehending him on Shay Lane. The suspect complained of pain and was treated at a local hospital. Lake Elsinore Municipal Water District responded to shut the water off. No roads were closed as a result of the accident, police said.
