The Southshore Elementary School PTA is hosting a 5K Color Run fundraiser on Saturday, March 21 and is encouraging the community to register and participate in order to raise funds for classroom supplies.
"We always try to have something health-related to incorporate the kids being active and raise money for the classrooms," said PTA Vice President Amy Huecker.
The first run will begin at 8:45 a.m. in the parking lot of Mt. San Jacinto College. The course will take participants through the local streets of Menifee while they get covered with color at seven color stations along the way. The run ends back in the MSJC College parking lot.
The PTA’s spring event always focuses on teaching students to lead a healthier life through physical activity. The event in the past has usually been a jog-a-thon. This year, PTA members tried to think of a way to get more of the community involved.
"People are super excited," said Huecker. "The majority of the kids are excited. They want to run. They want to throw color on each other, so that’s very enticing for them, and it’s on the weekend, so it’s something families can do."
At the finish line of the run, there will be a parking lot color party with food, drinks, music and 60 small business owners and vendors. All of the money raised through the run will go directly back to Southshore Elementary, to improve the classrooms and library to benefit the students.
"A lot of times, the classrooms have their own specific needs and things that they want," said Huecker. "Or, in general, the school might have specific needs they need filled, so we’re just bringing in money for supplies."
The color run is also approved to give students credit for the 100 Mile Club, as well as teenagers who need community service hours.
While early registration has passed, participants can still register up until the day of the event. Registration is $20 for those ages 12 and under, and $25 for age 13 and up. Registration includes a registration number with pins, a t-shirt and a color packet for all participants.
Registration packets can be picked up on Friday at Southshore Elementary in the parking lot from 1-4 p.m. Packets can also be picked up beginning at 6:45 a.m. on Saturday.
