A map of the course shows the direction runners will take in the neighborhood surrounding Mt. San Jacinto College and Wheatfield Park. Parking limits are discussed below.
As final preparations are made for Saturday's Southshore Elementary School Color Run, event organizers want to make sure residents are aware of the route that will be used and temporary parking restrictions that will be in place in some areas.
The 3.1-mile course will begin near the corner of Antelope Road and La Piedra Road, adjacent to the parking lot at Mt. San Jacinto College. Runners will head east on La Piedra Road to Menifee Road. They will then turn south on Menifee Road, run past Wheatfield Park and continue south to Craig Avenue. Runners will then head west on Craig to Hanover Lane, where they will head north to Albion Lane, proceed west to Antelope Road and return to the MSJC parking lot.
The first group of runners will head out at 8:45 a.m. A festival featuring 60 vendors will take place in the parking lot until 1 p.m.
Residents who plan to be in the area Saturday morning are urged to obey signs and traffic officers regarding temporary no parking zones. Signs are posted announcing no parking along the right (south) side of La Piedra Road and the right (west) side of Menifee Road from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to allow the runners room to maneuver the course. Parking is allowed on the other side of those streets and on surrounding streets, however.
Jennifer Beh, one of the race coordinators, said she has had complaints from angry residents concerned that they won't be able to park near Wheatfield Park for youth baseball and other sports activities that morning. She would like to remind everyone that this is a city-sponsored event and parking near Wheatfield Park remains available. Officials of Menifee Valley Little League and Menifee Pony Baseball are aware of the parking situation and have notified parents.
According to Beh, organizers of the event have paid to replace the temporary signs three times because of vandalism. Those in the area today and Saturday are urged to be respectful and support the event.
The Southshore Color Run is a fundraiser for school supplies and has received tremendous support. Pre-race packets are sold out, but individuals wishing to compete may do so by showing up Saturday morning wearing their own white shirt and buying a ticket for $20.
As participants walk, run or jog along the course, they will be doused with color at seven different stations. Every child needs a parent runner to participate.
