Each week, Menifee 24/7 honors top student-athletes at Paloma Valley High School. The coach of each varsity sport is allowed to select one athlete based on the previous week's performances or on potential shown by the athlete. Here are this week's Paloma Valley High School Athletes of the Week:
Wrestler Adam Andrade dominated his weight class for the second year in a row at the Sunbelt League Championships last Saturday. He also came through with an overtime victory against Temescal Canyon in the team's last league meet. Andrade joins the few elite wrestlers at Paloma Valley who are two-time Sunbelt League champions. He is also captain of the team.
Jocelyn Hannah is representing the girls water polo team. Her coach, Katherine Barrier, said she is being recognized for outstanding leadership, sportsmanship, and leading the Wildcats to a 12-10 victory over Heritage, scoring 10 goals.
Soccer player Melody Gonzalez had a goal and assist in a 5-1 win over Elsinore. Her coach, Marie Dillon, said, "Melody is one of the most talented players I have ever coached. She really understands the game and is team player. She is willing to do whatever it takes for the team to be successful. She plays both midfield and forward and even when she is not scoring goals or assisting, she really helps control our offense with her skill and determination. I really love coaching Melody."
Regina Sheffield is a team captain on the girls basketball team. She led the team last week in scoring, averaging 18 points with 6.5 steals in the two league games. Her coach, Romeo Galbreath, said Sheffield's leadership and defensive ability are a big part of the team's success.
Izaiah Cameron is averaging 10.8 points per game for the boys basketball team.
These athletes will be eligible for selection as Paloma Valley High School's Athletes of the Month, which will be announced next week.
