One person died and three others received major injuries Friday morning in a single-vehicle accident on the southbound side of Interstate 215 at Nuevo Road, police said.
Police responded to the scene on southbound West Frontage Road at 3:05 a.m. CHP and Cal Fire personnel were already on scene. According to police, the driver was proceeding at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his Kia Optima and left the paved roadway. The vehicle overturned several times.
A passenger in the vehicle, Robert Garcia, 27, of Perris was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, 20-year-old Vagner Riviera of Perris, and two other passengers -- a 19-year-old female and 18-year-old male -- were transported to local hospitals with moderate to major injuries. All three passengers had to be extricated from the vehicle by Cal Fire using the Jaws of Life.
The Perris Traffic Reconstruction Unit responded to the location and is conducting the investigation as a courtesy to the California Highway Patrol. The injured passengers' names are being withheld pending notification to their respective families. Anyone with information on this investigation is encouraged to call Deputy Kiebach at the Perris Sheriff’s Station, 951-210-1000.
