Reggie Murphy signs his letter of intent to attend San Diego State as he his joined by (from left) his sister, Delicia Murphy; father, Reginald Murphy Sr.; mother, Jackie Murphy, and girlfriend, Kora Wade.

Reggie Murphy, one of the stars of the 2014 Heritage High School football team, today signed a letter of intent to accept a scholarship to San Diego State.

Murphy was greeted by his coaches, teammates and students and was joined by family members during a ceremony in the gym. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound senior chose San Diego State over other interested college programs including Boise State, Colorado State and Fresno State.

"I thought they had a lot of recruits I could join with to create something special next year," Murphy said about the decision he made after taking a recruiting trip to San Diego State Jan. 23. "It's not too far from home, so I thought it was the right decision. I have a great relationship with the coaching staff there, too."

Murphy said coaches have told him he would be used as a "hybrid type" of position, including responsibilites as outside linebacker and defensive end. He was a standout linebacker last fall for the Patriots, who posted a 12-1 record and advanced to the CIF semifinals. In addition to his solid play and 42 tackles on defense, Murphy also played wide receiver for Heritage.

Patriots coach Kraig Broach said Murphy's best days are ahead of him.

"He's a very charismatic and positive guy," Broach said about Murphy. "Whenever you see him, he has a smile on his face. He's very engaging.

"Reggie was all arms and legs as a freshman. He was a quarterback who couldn't throw. Just to watch his hard work and his positive energy to see where he is today is very exciting for us."

"I was really goofy my freshman year," Murphy said with a smiling, referring to Broach's comments. "I hadn't grown into my body yet. I worked hard to develop as a player."
