Four standout athletes at Paloma Valley High School have signed letters of intent to accept college athletic scholarships.
Soccer players Bailey Calhoun and Christina Rodriguez announced they have chosen to attend Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State San Bernardino, respectively. Basketball player London Hoxie will attend Penn State Fayette University in Uniontown, Pa.
All-state volleyball player Erin Hamand, who previously signed a letter of intent to play for Colorado School of Mines, also was honored today.
Calhoun said she is excited to be joining the soccer program at Cal State LA, which is in first place in its conference this season and one of the top-ranked teams in the state.
"I just felt the coaches really drew me to the school," said Calhoun, a midfielder. "When I visited the campus, I just felt like I belonged there. The coaches felt like parents to me."
Calhoun's teammate with the Wildcats, goalkeeper Rodriguez, said she had similar feelings after visiting Cal State San Bernardino. She verbally committed to the school as a sophomore.
"I didn't want to leave California and I like how the team is really competitive," Rodriguez said. "I'm excited to still be playing my teammate, Bailey, in college."
First, Calhoun and Rodriguez have to take care of business at the high school level. The Wildcats girls soccer team is 7-0-1 in league play with two games remaining.
Hoxie will take a trip to Penn State Fayette in March but has already made his commitment.
"It was the coach," said Hoxie, who will study business in college. "He showed a lot more interest in me than the other schools."
Hamand, an outside hitter for the girls volleyball team, earned all-state honors last fall. She is excited to play for a strong volleyball program at Colorado School of Mines, where she will study petroleum engineering.
"I went on my visit in January and I really liked it up there," she said. "They're three-time conference champions."
Although her high school volleyball season is over, Hamand continues to stay in shape by playing travel ball and competing in weekend tournaments.
