After a driver of a stolen vehicle led police in a chase, deputies of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department shot and killed the man, when he tried to accelerate the vehicle toward deputies.
On Dec. 10, at 5:12 p.m., deputies spotted a stolen vehicle in the area of Lakeshore Drive and Riverside Drive in the city of Lake Elsinore. Deputies tried to conduct a traffic stop of the stolen vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over and a pursuit was initiated.
The suspect led authorities onto the 15, heading southbound, before exiting on Baxter Road. The pursuit continued to the driveway of a residence, located in the 34800 block of Killarney Lane of Wildomar, where the driver slammed the vehicle into a closed garage door. The suspect then accelerated his vehicle toward deputies, who then opened fire on the suspect.
The suspect succumbed to his injuries on the scene and his name is being withheld pending a positive identification and notification of next of kin.
No officers were injured at the scene.Per department policy, the involved officers will be placed on paid administrative leave.
Investigators from the Lake Elsinore Station and Riverside County Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed control of the investigation. The investigation is considered still active.
