City to Add Safer Rubberized Surface to Some Park Space

MENIFEE – Children will soon be enjoying safer tot lots at Lazy Creek, Nova and E.L. Pete Peterson parks. At its Dec. 17 meeting, Menifee City Council approved a contract for SpectraTurf to install new rubberized surfaces at these city-owned parks.

The resurfacing project is expected to begin the week of Dec. 29 and should be completed in late January, weather permitting. The playground area of these parks will be closed for one to two weeks while the new rubberized surface is installed. Temporary fencing will block off the construction areas.

"Not only will the resurfacing project provide a new surface and safer play area for the children using the parks, but it also has the added environmental and economic benefit of using recycled material from California-generated waste tires," said Community Services Director Robert Lennox.

More than 2,900 recycled passenger car tires will be used to make the new, spongy playground surfaces. The City received a $13,875 Cal Recycle Tire-Derived Product grant which will offset the project cost.

Park development impact fees will fund the project budget of $156,694.
