The Menifee Police Department has scheduled a specialized Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operation, with a goal to lower death and injuries on the roadways.
On Nov. 19, officers will be patrolling areas often frequented by motorcyclists and areas that motorcycle crashes have occurred more frequently. They will be looking for violations made by drivers and riders alike that can lead to motorcycle involved crashes. Police will be cracking down on both those operating automobiles and motorcycles who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, making illegal turns, or any other dangerous violations.
A similar operation will also take place on Nov. 13, in areas prone to motor vehicle crashes.
Motorcycle fatalities dropped 37 percent from 2008 to 2010, but rose up 23 percent by 2012. Operations such as this one, are done to try to drop the amount of fatalities back down.
The Menifee Police Department is asking all motorists to always be alert and watch out for motorcycles, especially when turning or changing lanes. Their message to all drivers and riders is to share in the responsibility and do your part by safely sharing the road.
Riders can get training through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. Information and training locations are available at www.CA-msp.org or 1-877-RIDE-411 or 1-877-743-3411.
