Each week of the school year, Menifee 24/7 honors top student-athletes at Paloma Valley High School. The coach of each varsity sport is allowed to select one athlete based on the previous week's performances or on potential shown by the athlete. Here are this week's Paloma Valley High School Athletes of the Week:
Slayter Rodriguez had a big weekend at the Riverside Poly Tournament in the first-ever water polo competition for the Wildcats. He had 28 blocks on goal and two assists. "He helped encourage his teammates and showed great pride while never giving up," said his coach, Katherine Barrier.
Football player Fred Lundy returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in the Wildcats' victory at Tustin last week. He also had an interception and a forced fumble.
Golfer Brianna Paquet shot 51 in a three-way match with Elsinore and Heritage high schools.
Setter Mikenna Orzech helped the girls volleyball team to a second-place finish at the Valley View Tournament, where she was named to the all-tournament team.
Tennis player Maria Volkoff went 3-0 in her singles sets against Hemet and is "really coming into her own," said her coach, David McCoy. "Her style of play is a model for the younger girls on our team."
These athletes will be eligible for selection as Paloma Valley High School's Athletes of the Month, which will be announced the first week of October.
