Opening statements are scheduled for Monday, July 21 in the trial of an Indio man accused of multiple robberies in western Riverside County in 2010 and 2011.
Sergio Lopez, 34, is charged with 69 counts, including robbery, kidnapping for robbery, false imprisonment, and burglary pertaining to 19 incidents. The trial will begin at 9 a.m. at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta.
According to a news release from the district attorney's office, the robberies took place at small businesses such as hair salons, barber shops, yogurt or sandwich shops, dry cleaners and a pet store. Incidents occurred in Murrieta, Temecula, Hemet, San Jacinto, Moreno Valley and Riverside.
Lopez was taken into custody following a robbery and vehicle pursuit in Indio in April 2011. According to the DA's office, he could face life in prison because of the two kidnap for robbery counts.
