A local family contacted Menifee 24/7 with a heartwarming story about 8-year-old Kane Van Slyke, who lives with his grandmother in Menifee. We were asked to share this photo and information with our readers.
On Aug. 6, 2013, Kane was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer known as osteosarcoma, which most commonly affects children and young adults. According to the American Cancer Society, the survival rate can be as high as 60 to 80 percent, especially if the tumor is completely removed by surgery.
Kane underwent treatments at Rads Children's Hospital in San Diego and lost his left leg as a result of the cancer. However, on April 1, as you can see in the photo, he was officially declared cancer-free.
Kane will be a third grader at Ridgemoor Elementary School this year.
