Police blocked off Domenigoni Parkway during the investigation of a traffic fatality Wednesday. |
The man, described as being in his 50s, was riding with another cyclist near the peak of the hill heading from Menifee toward Hemet about 5:30 p.m. when he was struck by a car driven by a male motorist, said Dep. Josh Cail of the Riverside Sheriff's Department.
The cyclist was declared dead at the scene. Domenigoni Parkway was closed to all eastbound traffic at Lindenberger Road because of the ongoing investigation. Neither the identity of the deceased nor the driver of the car has been released.
Stephen Kaas of Menifee said he was riding just in front of the other cyclist when the accident occurred.
"I didn't really see what happened," Kaas said. "He was riding behind me. I just heard it and saw him flying through the air."
The accident occurred on a busy stretch of road that is a main thoroughfare connecting Menifee with Winchester and Hemet. Police said the driver stopped and was cooperating with police. The investigation is ongoing and no details were released regarding the exact cause of the accident.
Anyone who witnessed the accident or has further information is asked to call Dep. Cail at 951-210-1068.
