Story is updated to reflect the options the school board has in taking action:
Anticipating another large crowd for a hot-button topic, the Menifee Union School District governing board has moved Tuesday afternoon's meeting from district headquarters to a larger venue at Quail Valley Elementary School.
Considering the attendance regarding this issue at the last meeting and the action recommended on the MUSD agenda posted online, it's likely that auditorium will be filled.
According to the agenda, MUSD staff is recommending that the school board deny a petition to allow the Menifee Valley Preparatory School to open for business for the upcoming school year. The board has already denied the petition once, sending the Heritage Classic Charter Schools to the Riverside County Office of Education with an appeal that was also denied.
The county board recommended that the group return to MUSD with a modified proposal, which it did on March 25. Before an overflow crowd of parents holding signs in support of the proposal, MUSD board members took additional testimony and set May 6 as the date for a final decision.
The recommendation put before them at Tuesday's 4:30 p.m. meeting proposes two possible courses of action:
-- Denial for reasons similar to the earlier rejection: Concerns about the curriculum's alignment with the state's new common core standards and instruction for English language learners.
-- Conditionally approve the petition subject to the charter school remedying the deficiencies identified in the findings of the staff report and the charter school executing an operational Memorandum of Understanding with the District.
Quail Valley Elementary school is located at 23757 Canyon Heights Drive in the Quail Valley Community of Menifee.
