A man who refused assistance and pointed a gun at officers was shot and killed at a residence in Menifee Monday night, police said.
At 9:27 p.m., officers from the Menifee Police Department responded to a "check the welfare" call at a residence in the 28200 block of Winged Foot Drive. Officers arrived within minutes and located a male subject in the garage of a residence.
According to police, officers made announcements offering assistance. The subject refused and instead pointed a handgun at officers. At that time, an officer involved shooting occurred.
The subject died on scene. His name is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin. No officers were injured and per department policy, the involved officers will be placed on paid administrative leave.
Investigators from the Menifee Police Department and the Riverside County Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed control of the investigation.
