Story updated at 11:45 a.m. with additional information:
All lanes of southbound Interstate 15 are now cleared and open following an early morning traffic accident involving several vehicles near the truck scales in the Rainbow community.
Officers and emergency vehicles responded to a multiple-car pileup about 5:35 a.m. According to the CHP report, eight vehicles were involved. A chain-reaction accident began when the driver of a 2014 Ford braked suddenly to avoid a crash occurring ahead of him. That vehicle was rear-ended by a 2008 Toyota. Five other vehicles were involved in rear-end collisions in the chain reaction and the rider of a Harley Davidson motorcyle was ejected after losing control of his vehicle.
Two vehicles rolled onto their roof and others were stopped in the No 3 lane. A SigAlert was issued and traffic backed up past the 15-215 split in Murrieta.
Lanes were cleared and the SigAlert lifted about 7:30 a.m. One driver complained of neck pain but no other injuries were reported.
