Kathy Crabbe will exhibit her painting "Winter Bird" from the Lefty Series at the Las Laguna Gallery in Laguna Beach from Dec. 5–21. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday. Crabbe’s painting was chosen out of 250 entries for the exhibition, "Animal Fairy Tales, Fable, Fact or Fiction."
“Growing up, I loved to fly in my dad’s small airplane; it was like entering another world, so I created my own imaginary world filled with angels, fairies and bird people," Crabbe said. "Sometimes I collage nonsense words using found text or write out crazy names and funny quips; the Leftys must speak up for what matters."
The Lefty Series was painted with Crabbe’s non-dominant left hand.
“When I turned 40, I became a Creative Soul Guide and lost all interest in painting with my right hand; it was time to explore new worlds," Crabbe said. "Drawing with my left hand was slow going, but it felt right in this fast paced, hyperkinetic world.”
Crabbe created the Lefty Series using technical pen, watercolor and gouache; their fluidity and simplicity helped to express the Lefty’s inner, ethereal nature. Crabbe believes strongly that, “The Leftys are Guides that help us enter into other realms; realms where inspiration, quirkiness, love, and being different are okay.”
