A Lake Elsinore man was sentenced today to 56 years to life for the murder of a Canyon Lake woman whose body was found in a suitcase at a Poway motel.
Joseph David Dorsey, 29, was found guilty of one count of murder and the jury determined it to be in the first degree. He was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Mark Mandio at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta.
Christine Stewart Osborn, 47, of Canyon Lake was reported missing on Aug. 6, 2012. Two days later, investigators received information that Dorsey had checked into a room at a motel in San Diego County. Dorsey apparently left without ever checking out.
At the scene, investigators found Stewart's 5-foot-2 body stuffed inside a large rolling suitcase. Cause of death was determined to be strangulation.
According to police, Dorsey and Stewart were in a dating relationship at the time of the murder and he killed her at his Lake Elsinore apartment before heading to Poway. Dorsey was arrested by Mexican law enforcement officials in Playas de Rosarito on Oct. 23, 2012 and returned to the U.S., where he is an American citizen.
