After considerable discussion and adjustments in two proposals, the Menifee City Council Wednesday approved recommendations by an ad hoc committee regarding metal shipping containers to be sent to the Planning Commission.
City officials have been considering a ban on large shipping containers such as those shipped overseas and transported by train. Some residents in rural areas of Menifee use these as storage containers on residential property. An ordinance designed to ban such containers was approved by the Planning Commission last year but was voted down this spring by the City Council, which approved a moratorium on new containers while studying the issue further.
After several revisions of the ad hoc committee's proposals, council members agreed to send to the Planning Commission two proposals to consider. One would allow residents to have such storage containers for the next six years, after which they would no longer be allowed. The other would allow the use of storage containers until the property is sold.
Council members Greg August and John Denver made up the ad hoc committee.
Council member Tom Fuhrman suggested several minor changes that were incorporated into the recommendation, including a maximum length of 40 feet. He suggested that if the Planning Commission and City Council could not come up with an effective way to reduce or eliminate the number of shipping containers at private residences, a ballot measure on the issue should be considered.
Once the Planning Commission addresses the issue, it would be sent back to the City Council for final approval.
