The Driveway Legends played in the Nike 3 on 3 Tournament in the Men's Elite Under Six Foot Division. The Legends beat the team San Diego's Finest in the final to come out of the tournament with an overall record of 6-1.
This is the fifth annual Nike 3 on 3 Tournament and the Driveway Legends have participated in the tournament for the last three years, winning in their division twice: In 2011 and again this past weekend. Last yearm the team made it all the way to the finals before losing in the championship round.
All four members of The Driveway Legends are from Menifee: Garret Caldwell, Andrew Madrigal, Adam Alfaro and Mycheal Perry. The four grew up together, said mother of one of the Legends, Patt Caldwell, and the team has been playing together for years.
"All four are great friends," said Caldwell. "Garret and Drew have known each other since the second grade and both have known Adam and Mychael for a long time now."
Caldwell said that as boys, the four friends were all well known in town and they all loved to play sports.
While they now have separate lives and responsibilities, each team member comes together to play basketball and doesn't want to let the others down. Caldwell said that her son recently hurt his finger and had to get stitches in it, but that didn't stop him from playing.
"I'm proud they won," said Caldwell. "They were confident they'd win. They've played together since they were little and they all know where everyone will be on the court.
"They deserve to be recognized by the community. "Drew and Garret used to coach youth leagues in Menifee and still go to their high school alumni games."
