A search party will reassemble at 8 a.m. today at Menifee Market on Scott Road near Murrieta Road to continue the search for an 11-year-old autistic boy who has been missing since late Saturday or early Sunday.

The family of Terry Smith is forming the search party with members of the community -- many of whom have been out all night continuing to search. The 8 a.m. search party was announced on the Facebook page of Faithful Servants, a local group that assists those in need.

Terry's mother posted on Facebook that the boy is in need of medication. He was reported missing at 10:30 a.m. Sunday from his home in the 33000 block of Helen Lane, a rural area off Scott Road on the west side of Interstate 215. Terry, wearing blue basketball shorts, was last seen around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

According to sheriff's officials, officers from the Menifee Police Department joined a helicopter, tracking bloodhounds, and many volunteers searching the area.

Terry is 4-foot-8 and 76 pounds. He has blond hair and blue eyes.

Many readers have communicated search plans on the Menifee 24/7 Facebook page, as well as the Faithful Servants Facebook page.

Anyone who may have information regarding the whereabouts of Terry Smith is encouraged to call the Menifee Investigations Unit at 951-210-1000 or Riverside Sheriff's dispatch at 951-776-1099.

  2. i don't know your son or if he has anything that he really enjoys hearing or listening to that is very reinforcing. I am autistic and know that often especially as children we may not respond to our name. however, if you play something over loud speakers that he likes, stims to, or echoes maybe play that. check all water sources FIRST. check small holes such as those big drains that are under roads. I would want to go in that. any dark enclosures or abandoned buildings. I am glad you have dogs searching. I am praying that they find him safe. ~Melody Rain.

    1. thats what im thinking he probably found shelter or something like home. something to make him feel safe and protected. its basic human instinct. would not doubt if he was in some type of giant drain pipe to hide from the darkness and keep safe and warm at night.

  3. I do not know your son or what he enjoys but I autistic and I know often children with autism do not respond to their name. so I was thinking possibly you could play something over loud speakers or radios that he stims to...maybe a phrase, words anything he likes to echo. or even a song that he likes to sing. turn it on and then turn it off and listen to see if you hear him. also another thing is check all water sources first. I am sure you know this. also check drains, small spaces and any small holes that he may want to crawl inside. Check abandoned buildings too or barns or any structures that may be nearby. I do not know the area as I live in NC. just thinking with my autistic mind of where I would go. I pray that he is found safe.

    1. When my son runs off, I humm. That is what brings him back to me. He comes running back and asks me for a kiss.

I've often considered, if I am ever in need to search for him, that I would hum over a megaphone in hopes to hear his reply of "I want kiss,' and I've often thought that I was crazy for thinking that might work...

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Now I know as a parent, I'm thinking from the correct perspective.

  7. I am also surprised that this child was last seen at 730p and then not reported until 1030a the next morning. I check on my kids before I go to bed, during the night if I wake up and first thing when I wake up. They are both diagnosed with HFA and are 15 and 17 yrs old but as a mom this is my job.

  8. Why was there so much time between seeing her son at 730p one evening and reporting him missing at 1030a. Maybe I am paranoid with both my sons diagnosed with HFA, 15 and 17yrs but I check on them before I go to bed, if I wake up in the middle of the night and first thing when I wake up. That is my job as a mom. Is there foul play suspected. Hope this child is found safe and sound.

  9. I have an autistic son and I can't helpp but wonder why it took 15 hours to report him missing. If this was my son I would have noticed he was gone almost immediately.

    1. it didnt take 15 hrs to report. mom was asleep like most at night then im sure she woke up the next morning as the son would. everthing was fine till mayby she went to the bathroom and came out and he was gone. it wasnt that it took her that long to report it. its not like she woke up the next morning and just sat there waiting to report it.

  10. I have an autistic son and am wondering why it took 15 hours to report him missing ? If my son was away from me for more than a couple of minutes, I would notice immediately, and he's 22 not 11.

  13. I am sure that the authorities will look into the lapse in time. What's important now is that the kiddo be found before anything happens to him.

  14. I don't understand about the lapse time either, but I wasn't there, so who am I to say. I don't have that right to question it. I just pray the boy will be found safe. GOD be with him and his Family. Prayers to all.

  15. She probably didn't think of reporting it because she probably thought he was just hiding.

  16. Stop judging this mother. You do not have all the details. We should all be focusing on his favorite places, strange cars in the area, neighbors in the area, and checking on sex offenders in the local area. Time is of the essence.

  17. I have a grandson that is autistic and he is 8 years old, and am nobody to judge anyone, but why would you wait so long to report your son missing, and I pray to god that he is safe and nothing has happen to him. Let's all say a prayer for him.

  18. I just hope he is found safe. I was in Menifee this morning. I could help but look around in all the places my eyes could see. I am praying for the family. We don't know the circumstances to this situation. So judging this mother based on the small amount of information we all have seems inappropriate. I really truly hope for the best out come for this boy. I can only imagine how scared he must be. Sending you my love little man!
