Riverside County Sheriff's deputies and rescue teams are searching a 14.7 square-mile area for a missing Menifee boy and plan to expand that to 16 square miles, a Sheriff's official said.
Deputy Albert Martinez said police have not ruled out foul play in the disappearance of 11-year-old Terry Smith, but there is "no direct link" that would lead them in that direction.
In addition to dozens of Sheriff's rescue team members on foot, horseback and with search dogs, nearly 500 Menifee residents are searching areas throughout the city. Throughout the day, they have come and gone at the volunteer command post at Menifee Market on Scott Road, asking which areas to search and donating food supplies for those searching.
Originally, the search focused on the area on both sides of Scott Road near Murrieta Road. The boy lives with his mother and 16-year-old brother on Helen Lane, on a dirt road about 100 yards uphill from Menifee Market. Now, however, the search has expanded in all directions and on both sides of Interstate 215.
Bill Gillette, coordinator of the volunteer command center, said he is now sending volunteers to Menifee Marketplace, where an unconfirmed sighting of Terry at the Target store was reported. Volunteers are also spreading out as far as Sun City, going door to door with fliers. Volunteers estimate about 5,000 fliers are being circulated and more than 50 large posters are being held up a major intersections.
Martinez said he has not heard of a reported sighting at Target. He did say, however, that police are following up on several tips of possible sightings. So far, however, there has been no confirmed sighting of the boy, who hasn't been seen since Saturday night.
A prayer circle will be held in front of Menifee Market at 7 p.m. today. Additional volunteers are needed for the search.
My friend was trying to put flyers in the Marketplace and mall security kept taking then down. We need help from the mayors office on this one....this little boy needs to be found NOW!
ReplyDeleteMy question is WHY would the mall security take these flyers down?? The missing boy is said to live not far from the Marketplace, so merchants would probably know him. If I had the 'authority' I would start questioning everyone that works there.
DeleteIts a big marketplace with a bunch of people coming in and out. I'm sure they don't know every person that is around. Menifee isn't as small as one would think. I am angered that they won't leave the flyers alone though. Its kind of low for them to take them down. I know there are rules and stuff but sheesh. It's a missing boy for Pete's sake, not an advertisement for services.
DeleteThat's just wrong that they would take them down!!! The mayor needs to tell them to back off and help

ReplyDeleteI hope everybody locally is looking in all cars, running or not, (including the trunks) and also any refrigerators/freezers, running or not.
ReplyDeleteYES...AND ALSO TERRY MAY HAVE CLIMBED A TREE AND CANNOT GET DOWN OR IS FEARFUL OF SO MANY PEOPLE THAT HE MAY SEE. YES, PEOPLE MUST SEARCH THE UNUSUAL PLACES AS WELL. WHAT ARE HIS HABITS AND PATTERNS THAT HE LIKES?
DeleteVillage Marketplace in Winchester was wonderful about us putting up & handing out flyers today
ReplyDeleteWhere are the volunteers to go at the Marketplace? We just drove around the parking lot. I asked two stores and no one knew anything about where I should go to help.
ReplyDeleteIt's not where you think...its on Scott road past Murrieta towards Wildomar
DeleteIts down Scott road near Murrieta towards Wildomar

ReplyDeleteI pray this little boy gets found.
ReplyDeletePLEASE SEARCH THE ROUTES TERRY WOULD TAKE INVOLVING A 'PATTERN' THAT HE USUALLY DOES OR HAS DONE. THIS COULD BE A SCHOOL HE ATTENDS, WHETHER A HOME SCHOOL, PUBLIC OR A PRIVATE SCHOOL, EVEN IF SCHOOL HAS BEEN OUT OF SESSION. TERRY COULD BE VERY CONFUSED AND NOT ABLE TO GET OUT, IF THE AREA WAS LOCKED, AFTER HE ARRIVED. HE IS AUTISTIC, AND DUE TO THIS, TERRY WOULD ONLY WALK WITHIN AN AREA OR PATTERN THAT HE KNOWS WELL AND LIKES. AUTISTIC CHILDREN ARE INTELLIGENT. HOWEVER THEY WILL ALWAYS INSIST AND PURSUE THEIR USUAL PATTERN TO A 'T', AND NOTHING ELSE. ANYTHING THAT TERRY HAS NOT BECOME COMFORTABLE WITH, HE WOULD NOT DO.I WOULD SEARCH MYSELF IN THOSE AREAS, BUT I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE HE ATTENDED SCHOOL OR WHICH PLACES HE LOVED TO GO.I LIVE IN MURRIETA AND KNOW NOTHING ABOUT TERRY. HE MAY HAVE ENCOUNTERED TROUBLE ON HIS WAY, OR AT THE DESTINATION. DENISE M MILLER justicebound@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteMy son was in his class last year and we checked the school twice. Our 2nd time there a district truck was there to open the gate and 3 people searched the grounds. Also I found out his teacher had already gone down there herself to look. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI would also check garages. With this heat a lot of people raise their garage doors a little to help keep garages a little cooler. We do this at our house. As you say with him being autistic he is going to stick to his normal patterns. I do hope he is found very soon.
ReplyDeleteI want to say thank you to are whole town i couldnt be more proud of the reaction and all the help i cant imagine if this was my son but i feel much better knowing that everyone just steps up and helps God bless this community and bring this boy home
