Paloma Valley High School was briefly placed on lockdown this morning after an employee reported hearing gunshots in an area outside the school, a district official said.
"A maintenance worker heard one or two gunshots," said Dr. Jonathan Greenberg, superintendent of the Perris Union High School District. "We don't believe they were directed toward the school. They appeared to be in a rural area northwest of the campus."
Greenberg said there are a few summer school classes in session and about 30 staff on campus, so the school was placed on lockdown as a precaution. According to Deputy Albert Martinez of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, officers responded to a call from the school at 8:56 a.m. and searched the area, including a helicopter search. Nothing was found and the lockdown was lifted.
