A Walmart Supercenter project, planned for this location north of Scott Road and between Haun Road and Interstate 215, can now move forward.
A victory for the City of Menifee in a lawsuit filed to stop the construction of a Walmart in town means the project, stalled for two years, can now move forward.

In a press release, the city announced today that judge Sharon Waters of Riverside County Court ruled in favor of the city in a lawsuit filed by Michael Mizak on behalf of the non-profit organization CREED-21. Walmart and the city can now proceed with plans for the Supercenter, which will be built on a 30-acre site at Haun and Scott Roads, across from the Shops at Scott development.

Citizens for Responsible Equitable Environmental Development has fought the construction of several Walmart centers in recent years. Before Menifee voters approved Measure C in 2011 to allow the construction of the Walmart, Mizak filed a lawsuit in opposition to the Planning Commission's approval of the project.

The court dismissed that case for failure to state a cause of action, but an appeal was filed. According to city officials, the judge's ruling this time was based on the finding that the Walmart specific plan is consistent with the city's general plan. The court deferred to the electorate that approved the project.

There was no immediate comment from city or Walmart officials on when construction might begin.

  2. Take that Michael Mizak!

Good, now I won't have to settle for the less than idea Elsinore walmart or go all the way down to Temecula. Should bring a good amount of revenue to the city as well.

Now just need a local movie theater!

    1. What about Murrieta? Regardless they bring in bad crowds and will weaken the value of the area.

    2. We have Walmart's in Perris, Lake Elsinore, Hemet, Murrieta, Temecula. Every city that surrounds us has a WM.
Understand, the people voted on it and approved it and more taxes will flow, but yes, all WM's bring more problems with them than they resolve.

  3. Bummer, was really hoping this would not happen. Walmart's historically have driven up crime in the surrounding areas.

    1. I agree. Look at the Murriet Walmart or Lake Els. Horrible crowds and the area isnot well taken care of.

  4. Walmart is a preditory company and the last thing that Menifee needs. It will run out of business all the great small businesses that we love so that you will find that Walmart is all that is left. They have done this in many towns and cities in the past.

Why wasn't this better advertized to the citizens of Menifee before this? When Measure C was on the ballot nothing in it stated that we were voting to approve a Walmart, just a shopping center or I doubt it would pass. If I had known there was an organization still fighting I would have supported them. Why do we only hear about these things after the fact?

I understand that Walmart also owns property on the east side of the 215 in Sun City off of McCall. Will we end up with two?

I'm sure there are those in Menifee that like Walmart for the prices, but the quality is very low for those prices and they tend to treat their employee's poorly.

I am very sad to hear that this will go though.

  5. Cannot WAIT for the additonal traffic at Scott and the 215 as well as at Newport and the 215. The narrow streets and bridges in this town cannot handle the current traffic. So instead of getting the infrastructure in place first, greed wins the day.

    1. You think traffic is bad now wait til the Newport construction starts and goes on for two years or more. Add to that widening Newport and redoing the on and off ramps to the freeway. Good luck going over the bridge. Plan you trips accordingly.

  6. If the small business provides quality products at reasonable prices people will continue to shop. Walmart provides a lesser quality at low price. Let the consumer decide what he/she wants and stop complaining about walmart. If the employees don't like it they don't have to work there or maybe that is the only place they can find a job so Kudos to Walmart for providing work for people who need jobs but don't have the experience or qualifications to work somewhere else.

  7. Yea we are a real city now that we have a Walmart. We shouldn't have to drive to other towns to shop. Lets be greatful for all the jobs this will create.

    1. Really and you think Walmart will only hire local people from Menifee. And what do you think the prevailing wage of a WM worker is? Think that wage is sustainable?

A commenter mentioned above that they didn't know that WM was attached to the measure the people voted on, come on now, WM representatives were all over town collecting the original signatures to put this measure out for vote. Maybe you are new here and were not aware of this, but the voting public was very aware of what this was about and unfortunately it passed regardless.

Like someone said earlier I don't have to worry about my daughter or wife driving to elsnoire or temecula....ALL WE NEED NOW IS A MOVIE THEATER so I could Shop, Eat and watch entertainment all in Menifee!!!

  10. I am so happy about the news, I don't have to drive to Hemet anymore, I work for Wal-Mart (Pharmacy) and I have nothing to complain about. Now I just have to drive 5 minutes and I will be at work. And I think Wal-Mart will bring great things to the City. Hoooa Wal-Mart about time! Lots of elderly people who lives in Menifee goes all the way to Hemet to pick their Medicine now they don't have to drive that far.

  11. It can only drive up the crime in the area if the city stops taking care of the area. Let's hope that doesn't happen! I'm confused as to what stores you think it will take business from...Target? Yes, there are a few small business owners left in Sun City and Menifee but most went out of business long ago. Those that are still in business have built good reputations and will still get business. They have many loyal customers if they've managed to keep their doors open this long. As far as beggars go, I've seen them at just about every store in Menifee, right along side the
"trash". The new Wal-Mart will bring in many jobs not to mention plenty of tax revenue. The traffic is a whole different subject to debate and I agree it will be atrocious. But the traffic is going to be that way regardless for quite some time to come. I think as big as Menifee is it will house plenty of room and opportunity for both mom and pop shops and big business. We are still a young city and have so much room for growth and development (not the housing kind, last thing we need is more of that right now) and the revenue this will bring in will help to do just that.

  12. Everybody wants the small town feel with big market options...yeh good luck with that. Nice to see the community I've lived in for 16 years turn into Murrieta part 2. We need to quit focusing on bring in all these big businesses that are 2 or 3 exits away, and focus on the actual needs of our town. Walmart will be the death of it.

  13. Sorry to hear this. And yes....the small local pharmacies and other small businesses do lose. They lose because they can not compete with Walmarts low prices. And yes..it will create jobs and revenue. But mainly part-time jobs...no benefits. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sorry to hear this is happening in your neighborhood, too. Small business' will be the losers as they can not compete with walmarts low prices. Lots of new low paying jobs will be made but they will mainly be part-time with no benefits. Good luck...

  16. build a Costco and not a stinking walmart. why build a store that attracts the dregs of society?

  17. I hope all these Walmart haters will shop somewhere else.It will free up some spaces in their parking lot for the "dregs".

    2. I agree. Menifee is starving for more business. Most mom and pop stores are in Sun City. The same people who shop at Target will shop at Walmart. Perris and Hemet is ghetto regardless if WALMART WAS THERE!

      Delete
  18. For me walking into a Wal-Mart is like walking into the ghetto, let's see who gets run over in the parking lot, sprayed in the face, mobbed to death, strangled or kidnapped,

    1. I sense by your comment the ghetto is a place you are comfortable with, why else would you go in there? "Mobbed to death"? Where are these marauding hordes coming from?

    2. You've never been to the WM over in Perris then. Check it out sometime if you can make it through the parking lot safe, then once you enter that location it gets real dicey.

  21. I don't think we need to worry about traffic. They will be fixing Scott road to accomodate walmart.

  22. We all complain about Wal-Marts, but we all end up shopping there.
