A Menifee veterinarian is training to participate in the California Coast Classic, an eight-day 525-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise funds for the Arthritis Foundation.
Tana Simmons, an emergency veterinarian at California Veterinary Specialists in Murrieta, says she is training four times a week to endure the challenges of the bike ride.
An expected 300 riders will participate in the event. Each rider is required to raise a minimum of $3,000 for the Arthritis Foundation in an effort of "prevention, control and cure of arthritis and related diseases."
To reach her goal of $3,000, Simmons is offering pet portraits for a suggested donation of $50 each. Each $50 donation will buy one 15-minute sitting with a photographer, one 8 x 10 photo and two 4 x 6 photos.
The pet portraits will be offered in two sessions by appointment only on Wednesday, July 17 and Sunday, July 28.
The Bow Wow Bath House will provide the pet portraits of either a pet alone or with a person. The Bow Wow Bath House is located at 25321 Railroad Canyon Rd., Lake Elsinore, CA 92532.
A portion of the funds bike riders raise will be used toward summer camps for children with arthritis.
"A lot of people are not familiar with the fact that children can get arthritis too," said Simmons. "They can't go to regular camps because of their medical problems. Although some of the money does to to research, the majority funds those kids to go to camps like other kids, but with facilities that can take care of their medical problems."
Simmons said the kids who the funds will be helping will be at rest stops along the bike trail to meet with the bike riders.

"Almost everybody knows somebody who suffers from arthritis or just themselves, so it's something that a lot of people have a connection with and I think it's a great cause," said Simmons.
The California Coast Classic will be held from Sept. 28 to Oct. 5
