Police are investigating as a homicide an incident in which a Quail Valley man was found dead in his jail cell Thursday after an apparent fight with another inmate.
Julio Negrete, 35, was discovered unconscious and unresponsive in his housing cell at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta at 12:35 p.m. Thursday. It was later determined that Negrete was involved in a physical altercation with another inmate. Lifesaving efforts were initiated by jail staff and emergency medical services responded. Negrete was pronounced dead at the scene.
Negrete had been at the facility for only one day. He was originally booked on Wednesday on narcotic charges.
Investigators from the Southwest Sheriff's Station and the Riverside County Central Homicide Unit were notified and assumed the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and no one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is encouraging anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Lead Investigator III Peters at the Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit at 951-955-2777.
