Jaime Sanchez, golf pro at North Course in Menifee, has spent much of the last two summers helping youngsters develop skills they didn't know they had. In the long run, he figures, they will be prepared to succeed with much more than just a golf club.
Sanchez's second summer golf camp provided opportunities for more than 105 local youths to learn about the game, building self-confidence and social skills at the same time. Rather than sitting in front of a video game all summer, these youngsters impressed Sanchez and other adult golfers with their ability to get out and do something special.
"I had a vision one night to teach kids to play the game that has meant so much to me in the years of my life," said Sanchez. "These kids needed to know that they had a place to come to learn, have fun and play the game of golf."
On Saturday, Sept. 8, many of those young golfers will show off their skills in a competitive yet fun atmosphere when they compete in a tournament at North Course to celebrate the end of their summer season. More than 45 youth golfers are entered in three different divisions. Sanchez expects close to 200 parents, friends and golf enthusiasts to come out and support the kids at this event.
"In this Olympic year, the spirit of true competition has touched the hearts of these future athletes," said Sanchez, who will represent Peru in the 2016 Olympics.
Sanchez said he is committed to providing ongoing opportunities for young people to learn and play the sport of golf. Thanks to many businesses and individuals who contribute to the program through sponsorships, he is able to provide financial assistance for those who need it.
Registration for the tournament will begin at 11 a.m. at North Course, 26660 McCall Blvd. Tee time is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. There will be a VIP section for dignitaries and special invited guests.
