Menifee resident Drew Howard, the young guitarist from Menifee who sought votes from fans to help earn a scholarhip to the Musicians Institute of Contemporary Music, has made it to the finals of the worldwide competition.
Howard, 18, finished among the top five vote recipients in an online contest and is now guaranteed a 50 percent scholarship to the prestigious music school in Hollywood. On Aug. 8 he will travel to Hollywood to rehearse with the institute's studio musicians and prepare for an Aug. 10 performance to determine the winner of a full scholarship.
A bass guitar player since age 9, Howard later played in the Bell Mountain Middle School jazz band and has performed in a local band as well. He is the only contestant from the United States still in the worldwide competition.
