The following is a message from Ken Dickson for State Assembly.
California’s 67th Assembly race has about five candidates lobbying for the bid to join the state’s legislature.
Behind one of these particular candidates is a spouse with mirror ambition for public service. She is her husband’s ultimate campaign supporter. Always wearing a dazzling smile and a walking testament to their values and winning attributes.
Susan Dickson, wife of Ken Dickson; married for 39 years this past May. Susan is a dedicated educator having taught throughout her entire career, now working with Riverside County Office of Education, in the teacher support center.
Raised in New Hampshire and on the east coast, Susan attended Duke University before eventually relocating to California to further her educational career. She taught for 10 years in California before moving to Murrieta.
After her husband was elected to the Murrieta Valley School Board, Susan realized there would be more opportunities to make an impact on the community. “He is very passionate about and shows concern for our country on a national and local level. We see the need and the opportunity to help our community and our state.” Volunteerism and public service are important areas where they both feel can use additional support and resources. “That’s Service Leadership,” says Susan. It is very apparent to anyone who meets the Dicksons that this is where their hearts are.
"This is a family effort and it has always been a family effort and I'm there to support my husband." She also said, “What God’s will is for him, I will stand by him and what is best for him.”
When asked about the potential of not seeing each other and the distance between Sacramento and Murrieta, "We talked about the good and the bad that comes along with politics," she said. "I don't think you are ever really prepared, but you always know what it comes with." Susan went on to say, "We try to be together as much as possible because I absolutely love and adore him and I am happiest when I am with him."
A low-profile lady, Susan doesn't push a personal agenda or orchestrate charity campaigns. The organizations and scholarships they contribute to, or are part of, are done from the heart without publicity. Susan, who is both pretty and pleasant, but often wary of the press, said voters, can expect to hear her laud Ken more regularly as the campaign enters its final days in June and November. "If it can be helpful, I am happy to share," she said. "There is nobody closer. He is my husband."
When asked about his wife, "You can't ask for more in a campaign spouse". “She is a wonderful wife and mother, and she refuses to take credit for all the wonderful things that she does,” says Ken. The love, support, and appreciation for one another are abundantly clear.
Life is going to change for both Susan and Ken, should the Dicksons win the Primary and General elections. It is a lot of responsibility no matter what you do for a living; being married to a state representative becomes a series of public appearances and political issue discussions. The balance of family and public life can be difficult in any political arena but the Dicksons are ready. If Ken is elected, Susan says she will stand by her husband every step of the way.
